A psychologist visits our surgery as part of the IAPT programme. If you think this treatment could help you, speak to any of us at the surgery and we can refer you to her. What is the IAPT programme?IAPT stands for Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and offers a range of treatments, advice and employment support. Is IAPT for you?IAPT can help if you are having problems such as feeling low, anxious, stressed, panicky, unable to cope or depressed, whether or not you understand what is making you feel this way. How will therapy help?IAPT can provide a range of therapies, and your therapist will advise and plan with you the most appropriate treatment to help you with the difficulties you are experiencing. Types of help include guided self help (supporting you to help yourself), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), group work, employment support, and advice and signposting to other agencies who can help with specific issues. What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely used therapy that treats emotional problems. Cognitive refers to our thoughts and the meanings we give to our experiences. Behavioural refers to our actions and what we do. An important part of therapy is the idea that emotions and behaviour are influenced by perception of events or the way we think about them. When people have emotional problems, such as depression or anxiety, our thinking patterns tend to change and we focus more on the negative side of things, or we can only imagine the worst scenario in any situation. As a result, we feel worse. CBT helps to identify these unhelpful and often one-sided styles of thinking and teach techniques to overcome them. What is guided self-help?Guided self-help encourages you, through the use of structured manuals, to identify emotional difficulties and learn strategies that will help you to successfully manage them. The process will help you to gain insight into your problems by changing your way of thinking and your behaviour. Employment supportPart of the IAPT service is to help people experiencing difficulties at work, or returning to work, due to problems such as depression, stress and anxiety. How do you get access to the service? In the first instance you need to visit your GP or practice nurse who will refer you to IAPT. The IAPT programme aims to provide a responsive service so you will usually be contacted by the team within a couple of weeks of receiving the referral. |
