One in twelve women in the UK develops breast cancer in their lifetime, and it is most common in those over the age of 50. Breast cancer can be detected earlier by two methods. Breast AwarenessIt helps if you become familiar with your breasts over time, so that you notice any change at an earlier stage. Ask one of our nurses for a leaflet on what you should look for. You can look at your breasts when you are having a bath or getting dressed. Look out for changes such as a lump, pain or thickening of the breast tissue. A change in the skin of the breast or change in the appearance of the breast or nipple may be important. Note any discharge from the nipple. If you find anything unusual come and see one of the doctors. Breast ScreeningMammography is offered to all women between the ages of 50 and 64. This is a special x-ray of the breasts performed by a lady radiographer at the screening unit at the Chelmsford and Essex Centre in London Road in Chelmsford. You will receive a letter of invitation every three years after reaching the age of 50. Most of the women over 50 are screened in the same year, every three years, in our area. This means that you may not be invited for screening as soon as your reach 50, but instead you may have to wait until it is the turn for our area. Once you are 65 and over you will not be automatically invited for screening but you can be screened for free if you request it. Phone 01245 513 405 or 01206 744 749 to make an appointment. |
