Cool the burnt or scalded area straight away with cold clean water, keep it in the water for 15 minutes.

Be careful if you remove any clothing, making sure it's not stuck to the burn or scald.

Don't apply any ointments or creams.

If the burn or scald is just red with no loss of skin or blistering, just keep it clean and dry and take paracetamol for the pain.

Contact the surgery when we are open if the burn becomes infected.

Go to casualty if

  • the burn or scald is bigger than the patient's hand

  • if the area becomes blistered or if skin has been lost. You can cover the area with cling film or a clean dry dressing before travelling.
