Medicine Cupboard

It's a good idea to be prepared for minor illness by having the right things in your medicine cupboard.

Remember to make sure that children can't get to the medicine cupboard, every year there are many cases of children accidentally poisoning themselves.

Here is a list of useful items which you could use as a shopping list.

  • Paracetamol tablets and children's syrup, useful for pain and fever

  • Ibuprofen tablets and children's syrup, also can be used together with a Paracetamol for pain and fever

  • Calamine lotion for itchy rashes

  • Anti-histamine tablets, cream and children's syrup useful for insect bites, itchy rashes and allergies

  • Oral rehydration powders for prevention of dehydration during diarrhoea, Dioralyte and Rehidrat are two popular brands

  • Decongestant for adding to hot water, for blocked sinuses etc.

  • Indigestion remedy

  • Plasters, a big box of assorted sizes

  • Bandages, crepe are good for supporting a sprain or stopping bleeding

  • Sterile gauze pads for covering a large wound

  • Cotton wool 

  • Antiseptic solution

  • Some assorted sterile dressings

  • Safety pins

  • Thermometer

  • Tweezers

  • Scissors

Always carefully read the instructions and advice leaflet with any medication before taking it
