If you can't sleep well at night it may be a symptom of other problems in your life. You may need help dealing with these and it helps to talk to a friend, or a counsellor or other health professional.

However, here are a few practical ways in which you can help yourself sleep better.

  • avoid drinking coffee or tea after 6 p.m.

  • don't use alcohol to help you get to sleep, as although it will help you get to sleep, it disturbs sleep later in the night

  • try and take some exercise in the evening to relax you, but not during the hour or so before going to bed

  • avoid watching films that are too exciting or upsetting just before going to bed

  • do something relaxing before bedtime such as reading a book or listening to relaxing music

  • don't go to bed without resolving any arguments

  • avoid sleeping during the day time

If the problem persists then come and see us as it may be a symptom of depression or some other emotional disturbance, and there may be other forms of help that you need.
