Changes in Workload
In the 10 years between 1991 and 2001 the total number of consultations rose by 27 %. The doctors saw 10% more patients in the surgery, and the nurses saw twice as many. The number of patients in our practice stayed about the same over this period.
In this period, many tasks were delegated to the nurses, such as immunisation of children, but especially the monitoring and treatment of chronic diseases such as asthma, emphysema, diabetes and high blood pressure. We are employing more nurses, for longer, now. It is probably the increase in these conditions that is responsible for the increased workload, together with the fact that the practice population is older on average. See chronic diseases and age profile in this section. This graph doesn't take into account the very great increase in administrative work that occurred in the same period. There are now more administrative tasks such as monitoring the various quality targets and recalling patients for their reviews. |
